Because of my life experiences, because I have seen so many things actually being done, even though I myself didn't do it. I learn faster, now, because of the overlap.

This idea that the more you know the longer it takes you to learn anything new has been totally the opposite in my experience. Seems much more sensible to me, and close enough to realistic, at least much more so to me, than the system they have now. Then for something more fundamental, shut as shooting a weapon, its 6 weeks of dedicated training to get the basics, than an additional month to learn all the fine art aspects of being good with the weapon? Then to gain an understanding of the subtle intricacies of the subject material it takes an additional 2 weeks of 8 hour days to gain additional ranks? So why not just say that for something as in depth and complicated as hard sciences, it takes 4 weeks of 8 hours days to master the fundamentals. Personally I would rather they just used college curriculum standards to work out fixed amounts of time it would take to learn a given subject. This is why the system totally breaks down for me. Or say he already has Engineering 2 in Maneuver drives, lets say he still has 17 skill ranks, why would it take him 2 years to go from skill rank of none in Engineering : Electronics, to an Engineering: Electronics 2, especially when there is a good amount of overlap between the two engineering skills? My only problem with the whole thing is why does it take him two years to get to skll rank 2 when he is 42, but he could have done it in less than 2 months if he had just done it when he was 18? MONGOOSE TRAVELER HAS ADVANCEMENT RULES AND THEY ARE NOT AGONIZINGLY SLOW. Hence the waaaaarrrgaaaarrbbl (the sound of my brain breaking as I realize just how truly stupid that whole "no skill advancement in Traveler" argument really is). That's pretty fucking impressive for an old guy like that.

So, to go from 42 nothing to martial arts master took Alexander Jamison a total of 109 weeks or 2 years. If he wanted to push his Gun Combat (slug pistols) 1 to level 2 at this point, it'd take him 24 weeks of practice. Pushing himself further, in half a year (six months of practice) Alexander Jamison is now a martial arts master with Melee (unarmed) 5 and a skill total of 22. 21 weeks later, Alex is at level 3 with a new skill total of 20, and 25 weeks later he's at level 4 and is getting to be a pretty damned good unarmed fighter, enough so that people are starting to fear his name in bars all across the trade routes. 20 weeks total (18 + 2) he's at Melee (unarmed) 2 - he's now a pretty competent Martial Artist, enough to at least get Jackie to break a little sweat. After 18 more weeks of practice (Skill Total 17 + Skill Level 1) he's improved to Melee (unarmed) 1 and increased his Skill Total to 18.Īlex finds he really likes this stuff, so he keeps practicing. After 17 weeks, our Old Dog has learned a new trick: Melee 0. Now, Alex is 42 and already a bit creaky so it's hard going getting out of bad habits and such, be eventually he gets the hang of it and picks up a bit of martial arts. Luckily, he has plenty of time to occupy on those space flights. Dragging out his friend Jackie Lee, he practices for a couple hours a day with Jackie during his spare time (getting in extra practice for those days he has to skip due to business).
